PLACES & RETRIEVAL LEADS

Where was Joseph from?

A difficult place name and precise journal references guide the next search.

Two original place statements still conflict

The inspected 1724 Louisiana census calls Joseph, 23, a Roman Catholic farmer and a native of Schwobse in Upper Alsace. Modern Schwobsheim is a probable interpretation of that word. The already known 1720 Phalsbourg record instead places his origin near Fort-Louis, with Augenem/Auenheim a qualified reading. The newer image strengthens one source statement without resolving the conflict or proving a baptism.

Evidence: E251, E236

A baptism still to locate

Targeted register and catalog checks did not identify Joseph’s baptism. Checked local series and selected images do not exhaust nearby parish or annex holdings.

Indexes point to articles

Les Voyageurs and Terrebonne Life Lines indexes offer precise retrieval targets. An indexed shared page is not proof that two names are related; the full article and its underlying sources still need to be read.

Evidence:

The household comes into focus

The 1724 narrative names an unnamed wife and describes about eleven barrels of rice and two years occupying the plot; it does not state an arrival date. Two copies of the July 1727 census show the probable household with one unnamed child and three pigs. The 1731 original records three unnamed children, one woman in a category combining wives and marriageable daughters, two enslaved people, three horned livestock and a firearm. None of these children is named Louis. Household counts cannot establish a complete biological family.

Evidence: E251, E252, E253
