WAGENBACH · WAGENSPACH · WAGUESPACK

The long history of a name

A history reaching into medieval records, without an invented medieval pedigree.

A name in 1275

A charter edition names Heinricus de Wagenspach on 6 November 1275. Later Bernese records preserve forms including Wagensbach, Wagisbach and Wagispach. These people are not established ancestors of the Louisiana family.

Place and language

The surname dictionary classifies Waguespack as an altered Alsatian Wagenbach, a habitational name. That identifies a kind of origin, not this family’s exact village or a continuous migration route.

Keep history distinct from ancestry

A medieval “de” or “von,” a similar place-name and a noble associate do not establish noble descent or family arms. The name history can be enjoyed while the earlier generations remain unproved.
