IRVINGTON, 1932–1940

A chauffeur and a boxer

Original directories now follow Wendel’s driving work from 1932; a 1934 entry also calls him a boxer.

Two occupations

The 1934 directory lists H. Wendel Schubiger, wife Eleanor E., as a chauffeur and pugilist. Pugilist means boxer. The family identification is a strong working match, while parentage remains inherited.

Evidence:

A later checkpoint

The 1940 directory lists Wendell F., wife Eleanor M., as a chauffeur. Name, occupation and locality fit a probable continuation, but the differing initials are preserved.

Evidence:

A story still to find

No matched bout, ring name, championship or amateur/professional status has been established. The directory gives a promising question to take into newspapers and athletic records.

Evidence:

New: driving in 1932

The original 1932 Irvington directory lists Wendel (Elenor), chauffeur, at 426 Stuyvesant Avenue; Charles W. (Alice), salesman, shares the address. Henry (Mamie) is at 490 Nye Avenue. This strong working match moves Wendel’s occupational trail two years before the chauffeur-and-pugilist entry. The directory does not state the men’s kinship or when boxing began or ended.

An intermediate directory clue

The 1936 Irvington directory’s automated text places Wendell F. and Eleanor at 426 Stuyvesant, and Henry and Mamie in the ice trade at 136 Prospect. This is a useful intermediate lead between the visually read directory checkpoints; the original 1936 page still needs review. It supplies no named boxing bout, ring alias or exact career dates.
