A NAME UNDER REVIEW

Clement of Marfa

A contemporary obituary strongly fits the family—and challenges an inherited middle name.

What the newspaper prints

The 29 May 1926 New Era obituary names Clement Edwards Waguespack, age 44. Marfa, the family’s movements and the six-child composition make identification with Davis’s father very strong. The inherited tree calls the older man Clement Joseph.

Copied agreement is not corroboration

Several later tree copies repeat the same Joseph assertion. The older 2009 record has no middle name. Edward/Edwards currently has stronger direct contemporary support, but the name has not been silently changed.

Keep the dates qualified

Weekday wording implies a 26 May death and 27 May funeral. Birth year, age and Riceland/Roseland claims conflict across sources. Original civil and cemetery evidence is needed before replacing precise vital facts.

A conflicting family account

Gladys Malina’s 2010 obituary names parents Clement Waguespack and Eugenie Melancon, later uses Clement J., and places the widow’s Marfa move after his death. That conflicts with the contemporary account of Clement already living there. John appears among her siblings; his identity remains unresolved. [GLADYS.PUBLISHER]

A separate Edward lead

A third-party transcription of the younger Clement Joseph’s Social Security material—birth September 8, 1914, Lockport—names his father Edward Waguespack and his mother EUGEALEM MELANSON as an unusual transcription, not a verified spelling. The underlying application or government row is unread. Its January 15, 2000 death date also conflicts with Getz listing metadata’s January 2. Keep the 1914 son distinct from his father; neither the name nor dates should be silently corrected. [CLEMENT.SSA.LEAD; CLEMENTJGETZ]

The next evidence to settle the conflict

Prioritize the elder Clement’s May 1926 Texas death certificate, 1918 draft card and original 1908 Orleans marriage, volume 30, page 574, state record 147552. Compare parent names, signatures, addresses and informants. A bounded visual browse of 66 Lockport census pages found no confident household match; faint pages and other localities remain to check. This is not evidence that the family was absent.

The recovered original pages

The New Era, Marfa, May 29, 1926, page 5. The contemporary obituary and widow’s card are on this full original-page rendering. The implied May 26 death date remains a newspaper inference. Tap to enlarge.
